Pages 1-37

Ok the first thing that made me look at again and think for a second was that a clock does not have 13 hours on it, unless we're talking military time.
Even really early in the book the first ten or so pages there is a lot of description, as the reader we already know what Winston Smith looks like, and what everything that leads up to the flat looks like.
The repetition of the three themes WAR IS PEACE, FREEDOM IS SLAVERY, and IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH, makes it somewhat obvious or makes the reader thing that there is some importance, Big Brother must be kinda relevant also because it has been mentioned more then a few times in this section. And there has to be something more then him just suddenly starting to write stuff on paper like he did with the August 4th 1984 diary caption, but i am still wondering why he wrote down with DOWN WITH BIG BROTHER, i think that it must be that he saw all of the the things that were pertaining to it, like the three themes. And i think that all of this wierd writing is messed up i mean like i think it kind of signifies that he is like not focused or that he is going to try to accomplish something in the story.
In chapter three the dream of his mother and him on the sinking ship sort of makes me think back to chapter one when he is talking about how the movie was with the people on the sinking boat and how the helicopter show down all of those people and the bomb blew up the women and the little boy in the boat. And that in the book how to read like professional that everything that is written always goes back to Shakespeare because he wakes up saying it or whatever.

I never did make that connection, with the sinking ship dream and when he talks about the movie with the sinking ship, but I understand where you are coming from. He also said that they had to leave because of him, like it was his fault, so maybe his dream is making him feel guilty.

I don't recall the part where he had a dream about a sinking ship (I probably wasn't paying attention), but I'm really curious about what exactly happened to his parents.

I also found it really disturbing how everybody cheered when a woman and her child were killed. It just goes to show you how corrupt those people have become. I think I might prefer to be taken away by the Thought Police rather than to turn into something like that...

I thought the connection you made between his dream and the movie was great. Perhaps his mother and sister were on a boat like that when they died in real life?? As far as the time, I've always thought it was military time, or perhaps a new time they made up, like the newspeak dictionary.
